[ He finds it kind of charming that they're both so partial to this rabbit character...
When she gets there, he gives her a smile. His eyes are still kind of red, but he looks like less of a trainwreck than he did last night, so. ]
Well, this sort of game should be fairly straightforward -- you're maneuvering one of these small vehicles around from an outside perspective, and you want the one you're controlling to reach the finish line first.
There's this round stick on the left side of the controller that can move in any direction, so I'm assuming that will be what's used for steering, and then there are some buttons on the right side that... will do something, I don't know. There should be a screen explaining once we start.
Not really; the fact that you're controlling it from outside rather than from the perspective of being inside in the driver's seat makes a big difference. Plus actual driving involves foot pedals, which obviously aren't a thing here. --It's closer than nothing though, of course, if that's something you're interested in.
[ Is it...? Hm. They're in the midwest, so he supposes they could always go out to some rural farming town and she could try driving around on the empty roads along the corn fields.
Anyway, starting the game up!! They can watch whatever introduction it has for a preview of what they're about to get into. ]
We'll each get to pick a character to play as, so you can keep an eye out for one you think you'd like.
Huh, that's pretty impressive. I've only been on boats as a passenger. Was it a motorboat or sailboat?
[ Looking at the menu now... ]
Let's see... There are different weight classes, which I think is the main thing? So it depends on what kind of style you prefer. I think the lighter ones would be quicker to accelerate but have less power once they're going.
[ Hm... he thinks he can kind of potentially picture this?? He needs to find out if she actually liked that thing, maybe he can make a nicer one for her birthday or something. Anyway. ]
Well, the midweight ones would probably be pretty steady, yes. And then either the light or heavyweights would likely take a bit more skill or strategy.
[ Flipping back and forth between two pink-themed Koopa kids and eventually pausing on the big one with the sunglasses. ]
[She looks at the screen. Then at the controller. And then she presses "A" to select Luigi because her cursor was already on him by default as the second player.]
Well, they're in order by level of difficulty, and that one is... here, at the end of the fourth set. I think we'd both probably just go flying off the track if we tried it now before we're familiar with the controls.
[Hard same. She nods, pressing down on A once the light turns!!
...And, uh, doesn't quite manage to turn hard enough to make the curve, thus slowing down when she ends up off-road oh boy this is definitely a learning experience.]

????????????
He didn't say anything about this to you either, right??

I'll be up in a minute.

Thank you.
saturday evening
If you want to join me, I think I'm going to start practicing this game so I can kick Subete's butt whenever we finally play it.
Re: saturday evening
[And she'll be up shortly!]
...How do you play, anyway?

...Is it anything like real driving?
[That might be a lot, but she'll go ahead and take a controller, eyeing all the buttons.]

[Well... boat.]
Do the characters make a difference?

...I think it was closer to a motorboat, but it wasn't open. ...Actually it was more like being in an oversized barrel.
[Y. Yeah. But peering at the characters now!]
So some characters are steady but others have better gains if you can play well long enough...

I think... I'll try this one.

All right! We can always try out some others later anyway to get a feel for all the options.
[ Looking over tracks... ]
I know he was interested in that rainbow level, so we'll definitely have to practice everything in that set once we get used to playing.
[ But they're definitely starting with the most basic stuff now. ]
no subject
We can't practice it now?
[Seriously how do games work she has no idea this is probably her first video game ever.]

So to be able to beat that track, you need to learn how to play through all of the other ones first and use that experience... I see.

[Getting ready to play though!!]

Please leave it to me. I will train hard to make sure I can crush them at this "rainbow level."

You are wonderful. Thank you for being here with me.

[Dryly. But no less petty.]

[ And I'm going to handwave a lot of this because most of my Mario Kart knowledge is 20 years old and probably no longer valid!! ]
All right, so that A button there-- get ready to push that down once he says go.
